OUR EXPERTISE

A.U. TOMER

Ankara University Turkish and Foreign Languages Research and Application Centre (A.U. TOMER) was founded in 1984 as the first institution to teach Turkish as a foreign language in Turkey.

Founded with the main purpose of teaching Turkish to foreign students studying at Ankara University, TOMER has developed programmes, methods and materials for the teaching of Turkish as a native and foreign language and has been a pioneer for similar activities in Turkey. In addition, within the framework of agreements made with many state and private institutions, TOMER teaches foreign languages to Turkish citizens and Turkish to foreign people.

Language teaching started at TOMER to meet traditional teaching methods; in time, newly-designed approaches to language teaching were adapted to meet the language teaching environment in TOMER; today, TOMER is an institution that houses various research as well as classroom material designed and produced at TOMER.

In 2001 was the year when TOMER produced a coursebook titled "Hitit", the product of 19 years' of foreign language teaching. For the last two years, "Hitit", together with its supplementary material, has been the main coursebook in all TOMER branches as well as in many countries for the teaching of Turkish as a foreign language.

Each year, TOMER teaches Turkish to tens of thousands of students, among whom are officials from foreign representatives in Turkey, and students studying in Turkey under special agreements; today, TOMER is transferring its huge experience in language teaching to the virtual environment by means of the Distance Turkish Learning Centre.
